Adult Literacy Class
According to the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance (BNIA) Neighborhood Statistics, the Hampden, Medfield, and Remington neighborhoods have almost a 14 percent high school dropout rate. For individuals without a high school diploma, employment opportunities are extremely limited, and are typically restricted to hourly, minimum wage jobs. In fact, high school graduates earn on average $7,200 more annually than those who have not received a high school diploma.
The Family Center in partnership with Strong City Baltimore provides Adult Basic Education classes to promote literacy — including reading, writing, and math. These classes provide Hampden residents the opportunity to strengthen their literacy skills and prepare for the GED class and exam. We work with adults aged 18 and above. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30–8:30 p.m. for 10 weeks per session. Two sessions are held per year. The winter/spring semester begins January 21, 2020. Registration is required. Fitness for 50+
Get in shape with an exercise class for those 50 and older! Led by a trained professional from MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, classes are every held every Tuesday from 10 a.m. -11 a.m.
This event is one of the most established and popular Family Center programs. Held the third Friday of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Senior Luncheons provide a place for Hampden seniors to congregate and share in fellowship.
This program provides a perfect opportunity for other organizations and social outreach services to talk to seniors and provide them with health and wellness information. Most importantly (to the seniors) the meal is followed by Bingo and a chance to laugh and win prizes. Please call the Family Center at 410-467-8710 to reserve your seat.
Life Balance/Weight Management
Life Balance/Weight Management. This FREE 16-week, one-hour-per-week class focuses on helping participants to make healthy lifestyle changes. These lifestyle changes have been known to decrease the risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. The program is facilitated by a registered nurse who will help support participants to make positive health changes. Topics include effective ways to lose and maintain weight loss, healthy eating, fitness and exercise, coping skills, problem solving, and stress management. Tuesdays at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Gentle stretching and strengthening exercise, all done while sitting in a chair.
Wednesdays at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Low-impact aerobic exercise, followed by strengthening and stretching. Light weights and exercise bands are optional. This class can be done while sitting in a chair.
Thursdays at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Twenty minutes of low-impact standing exercise followed by 50 minutes of floor yoga.
